SKILL BUILDING CLASS #3: JOINERY

  • Once wood has been prepared for use (that is, by making sure the wood is flat, straight, and uniform thickness) and has been cut to appropriate sizes and shapes, the final step is to join the pieces of wood together in a fashion that is strong enough for the intended purpose.

There are many methods to join parts together. The most commonly known are screws, nails and glue.

If chosen and used properly, screws and nails can be quite strong and efficient methods, despite widespread ideas that joinery without nails or screws is always "better." Once again, the types of fasteners and techniques are sometimes very different from those used for house building and home improvement. But the methods appropriate for furniture making are not difficult once understood, and finding appropriate fasteners is not difficult either, once one understands that what is sold in DIY stores is not generally intended for the type of woodworking we are talking about.

After learning how to use nails and screws effectively and how to combine them with other techniques such as gluing and simple wood joints, the student will already be able to build strong and attractive pieces of useful furniture. Students who wish to do so can also go on to look at pure classical wood joinery, which does not involve the use of metal fasteners and sometimes does not even rely on glue. This type of joinery is still used by western furniture makers and Japanese carpenters because it produces ways of joining that would literally survive for centuries, and are considered the hallmarks of truly fine woodworking both in the western furniture making tradition and in Japanese carpentry.

As with all of our skill building classes, the objective is not to produce a finished piece in a mere few hours, but to teach the skills necessary to pursue woodworking on one's own without prohibitive investments in expensive tools and machinery. Of course, students who take these classes regularly will naturally work towards finished products.
