SKILL BUILDING CLASS #1:
MAKING WOOD FLAT AND STRAIGHT AND READY TO USE
This skills class will enable the student to understand the importance
of boards being flat and straight, how to measure and determine accurately,
with no expensive tools, whether a piece of wood is flat and straight, and how
to use a plane to make wood straight and flat so that it can be used to
assemble a finished piece.
The fundamental tool for making wood not only straight and flat on all
sides, but also a correct and uniform thickness, is the plane. The plane is
usually the first tool to be employed in woodworking, and in many ways is the
most important and fundamental.
The first class teaches how to make wood flat and straight so that it
can be joined together with other pieces of wood. The primary reason most
beginning woodworking projects fail is that the parts don't fit together, although it seems that they should.
This is because beginning woodworkers assume the wood they buy is
already flat and straight enough for their purposes. This is almost never true, for various reasons that we will teach in
these classes--although other products, such as plywood, fibreboard, and
particleboard (which are often very convincingly disguised as wood) may be flat
when you buy them.
As with all of our skill building classes, the objective is not to
produce a finished piece in a mere few hours, but to teach the skills necessary
to pursue woodworking on one's own without prohibitive investments in expensive tools and machinery.
Of course, students who take these classes regularly will naturally work
towards finished products.
